Understanding the Urban Pace

Melbourne’s CBD is built around movement. Streets, trams, stations, laneways and arcades move people efficiently across the city, yet relatively few spaces are designed around the opposite condition — slowing down.

At the same time, many ground-floor tenancies remain vacant or underused, particularly within older commercial buildings and secondary laneway frontages.

This case study asks whether those fragmented spaces could become part of a new kind of public network.

Instead of creating one standalone wellness destination, the proposal reimagines selected vacant tenancies, courtyards and through-block connections as a chain of slower urban spaces embedded within the existing city grid.

A person might enter from a busy street, pass through an exhibition, pause beside a garden, stop for coffee, read for a while, work quietly or continue through to another laneway. The intervention is not about leaving the city.

It is about creating moments within the city where its pace can temporarily change.

Design Response

The proposal is conceived as a distributed network of connected urban spaces across multiple ground-floor tenancies.

Underused spaces are selectively opened and linked through Melbourne’s laneways, arcades, courtyards and secondary street frontages, creating a broader pedestrian sequence through the city.

The route moves through different levels of stimulation.

Public-facing exhibitions sit closest to busy streets and laneways. Garden courtyards introduce daylight and vegetation, followed by cafés, libraries and quiet work areas. Meditation rooms and sheltered retreats occupy the most protected parts of the sequence.

Existing brickwork, shopfronts and structure are retained where possible, with stone, timber, linen, planting and translucent materials introducing a warmer layer.

People can enter, pause, continue or simply use the route as another way through Melbourne.

Long-term Value

The strength of the proposal lies in connecting spaces that already exist.

Vacant ground-floor tenancies can be reactivated without large-scale redevelopment, while laneways and courtyards gain new roles as places to pause, meet, read, eat or move through.

For building owners, individual tenancies can support different programmes, operators and revenue streams while contributing to a wider network.

For the city, the model could improve pedestrian permeability, activate underused laneways, introduce more greenery and create new reasons for people to remain between conventional destinations.

The network can also grow incrementally, allowing greater public value to emerge from Melbourne’s existing urban fabric over time.

This case study reimagines Melbourne’s existing city grid as a network of slower public experiences.

Across selected ground-floor tenancies, laneways, arcades and internal courtyards, underused spaces are transformed into a connected sequence of exhibition areas, gardens, cafés, libraries, quiet workspaces, meditation rooms and sheltered places to pause.

Each node has a different character, but together they form a gradual shift from the intensity of the street toward quieter and more reflective conditions.

The route does not need to be experienced from beginning to end.

Someone may enter for coffee and leave through another lane. Another person may stop at an exhibition, work in the library or simply walk through a planted courtyard on the way somewhere else.

The project treats wellbeing as part of the public realm, not as a service hidden behind a single front door.

By working with Melbourne’s existing urban fabric, slowing down becomes something that can happen naturally within everyday movement.
