Decision
To preserve the spatial integrity and character of the Peranakan shophouse while introducing contemporary living standards through restrained intervention rather than stylistic contrast.
Risk
Without a carefully calibrated approach, the project risked reducing heritage to a visual backdrop, where character was preserved superficially but disconnected from contemporary patterns of living and long-term operational comfort.
Outcome
A serviced living environment where heritage qualities are integrated into everyday experience through spatial organisation and material continuity, allowing historic character to support comfort, legibility, and sustained use rather than function as static preservation.
Reinterpreting Heritage Calm
Set within a conserved Peranakan shophouse, this serviced apartment is shaped by an early decision to approach heritage as a lived condition rather than a preserved artefact. The design retains the spatial generosity of the original architecture — high ceilings, timber structure, and patterned details — while introducing contemporary calm through restraint and clarity.
Rather than layering contrast, the project aligns old and new through proportion, material continuity, and light. Soft neutrals, crafted timber, and natural textures establish a quiet domestic rhythm, allowing heritage elements to remain present without dominating experience. Each suite is organised to balance comfort with character, supporting both retreat and everyday inhabitation.
The result is a composed urban sanctuary where heritage and contemporary living coexist with ease— an environment defined not by nostalgia or novelty, but by continuity, atmosphere, and long-term use.
